Picasa is free software from Google that provides an easy way to organise and edit your photos, create movies, collages and slideshows, and upload the results to Picasa Web albums so they can be shared with friends, family, fellow bushwalkers and the world.

Whether you choose to organise your photos with Picasa or not, you should really take advantage of using it to edit and upload your images for sharing on the web. The editing software is superb, intuitive, easy to use, and non-destructive - it does not change the images on your computer - it only changes the images as they are uploaded to the web. It allows you to make all kinds of adjustments to your images on the fly - lighten, darken, add contrast, crop etc. It then automatically creates thumbnail images and resized larger images (a choice of three sizes) and optimises them for display on the web.

What would take a website designer a couple of hours to produce can be done by anybody using Picasa in just a few minutes!

In addition, Picasa Web Albums gives you 1GB of free webspace - but if you keep your uploaded images smaller than 800 x 800 pixels, they do not count towards your quota. And as you can have 10,000 albums, with 1,000 images in each one, you can upload 10 million images!

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Download the Picasa software - click here for PCs or here for Macs.

2. Install the software.

3. Create your Google account - click here to go to the Picasa Web Albums site, then click on "Create an Account".

4. Run Picasa - it will catalog every image on your PC, but you can limit it to specific folders later (see step 7).

5. Click on "Sign into Web Albums" - enter your Picasaweb sign-on details.

6. Click on Tools - then on Options, then on the Web Albums tab, change default size to Small and visibility to Public.

7. Click on Tools - then on Folder Manager, and limit the folders that Picasa looks at as desired ie. just to My Pictures.

8. Upload photos or folders as desired - see video link at the bottom of this page

To view your albums online, click on the Web Albums link in the top right corner of the page. The albums created online will be the same name as the folder which stores the photos on your PC.

Once uploaded, you can edit your album online, rename it, delete photos, re-order the photos, add location maps, add captions, tags and comments, and share the album with friends. Have a play with it and see how easy the whole system is!

If you already have a Google account and want to keep your BBCC albums separate from your private albums, contact the Webmaster for a BBCC email address ie. person@bayandbasincameraclub.org.au.

Once you have created your web albums, please send their URL (web address) to the webmaster so it can be added as a link to our site. The URL will look something like this :- https://picasaweb.google.com.au/1234567891011 (click on View My Public Gallery to see your URL).

If you have any problems with any of the above, feel free to email the Webmaster.

I will add links below to YouTube videos explaining how to use Picasa.
